At the time of buying or owning a car, one of the most important considerations is the fuel efficiency or the mileage of the car as beyond the initial purchase price of the car; we are going to end up paying as much on the mileage of it if we ignore the fuel efficiency. So it is the most important thing in order to determine the worthiness of the car.
Car mileage: The fuel efficiency of the vehicle can be defined as the amount of fuel consumed per unit of distance traveled. It can also be specified as the consumption of the fuel with no load, laboratory conditions or actual conditions etc. the mileage of the car is generally calculated by filling a car’s tank with a quantity of fuel as well as by measuring the distance at which the total amount of the fuel has been consumed.
Engineering and fuel consumption of car: in simple terms, the whole power of the car is developed in the engine where it can pass on the crank shaft. The fly wheel which is connected to the crank shaft connects to the clutch, gear box, propeller shaft and then finally the wheels.
Engine of car: The engine of the car is responsible for the consumption process as well as it is a type of chemical energy which gets transferred into mechanical energy. In technical terms, then the efficiency of fuel comes into the picture from the combustion process. The different combustion processes in petrol and diesel car should also be taken into account.
In the petrol engine, the fuel air mixture will be sucked at the time of suction stroke and spark which will occur at the end of compression stroke and leads to the power stroke. It also gives the actual power.
The ultimate goal of the combustion process is to convert the chemical energy of fuel into the energy as the burning of the fuel in the combustion chamber is directly proportional to the energy output and that’s why it is efficient. This is the most important point which should be considered while designing an engine.
In order to get maximum energy out of fuel along with maximizing mileage, few points should be kept in mind while designing an engine, which are as follows:
- Exhaust losses should be reduced that can be done by finding out another way of best utilization of heat.
- Reduced cylinder losses may be affected by the use of suitable alloys at the time of manufacturing engines and cooling system plays an important role in maintaining proper temperature of the cylinder block.
- Use best of the lubrication system and highly quality bearings.
- Ensure complete combustion of fuel.
